South Australia’s under-18 side staged a spirited second-half revival, but fell short by 12 points against Western Australia in Game 1 of the 2026 Marsh AFL National Championships in Perth.
SA trailed by as many as 34 points during the second quarter, yet battled back to within a kick twice in the final term before Western Australia's James Artemis kicked a sealer in the 21st minute.
SA forward Anthony Long kicked three goals, including two crucial majors in the last quarter. Forwards Jack Slattery and Gabe Patterson also posed constant threats up forward.
SA vice-captain Cain Florance ignited the comeback with a 40-metre goal inside the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Patterson then converted from the goal square after being awarded a 25-metre penalty, and Long narrowed the margin to just four points at the eight-minute mark of the final term.
