Pioneer has announced Sphera, an aftermarket in-dash receiver, at CES 2026. The company states that Sphera is the first aftermarket spatial audio in-dash receiver to feature Dolby Atmos playback within Apple CarPlay.
Dolby Atmos Integration
Previously, in-vehicle Dolby Atmos was available exclusively in vehicles equipped with factory-installed Dolby Atmos sound systems. Sphera aims to extend access to Dolby Atmos through an aftermarket solution designed for installation in existing vehicles, utilizing their current speaker configurations. Automotive integration of Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio has been limited to specific vehicle models. Apple supports these audio technologies across its product ecosystem, including AirPods and HomePods.
Pure Autotuning Technology
Pioneer intends to enable Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio in a broader range of vehicles using an optimized 4-channel solution that integrates with existing front and rear speakers. This is facilitated by Pioneer's "Pure Autotuning" technology.
Vehicle cabin acoustics are influenced by factors such as size, shape, materials, and aftermarket modifications. PURE Autotuning technology is designed to address these variations by precisely adjusting time alignment, frequency response, and channel levels. The objective is to optimize audio performance and position the listener at the acoustical center, aiming to reproduce Dolby Atmos content as intended by creators.
Sphera Features
The Sphera unit includes a 10.1-inch HD capacitive display. Key features comprise:
- A split-screen mode for accessing controls.
- An integrated Pioneer Luminous Bar with an Enhanced Visual Mode for navigation support and a Music Synchronization Mode for audio-synced lighting.
- Wireless connectivity through Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth.
The unit is designed for universal aftermarket installation, aiming for compatibility with a diverse range of vehicles and a simplified upgrade process.
Availability and Pricing
The Pioneer Sphera will be available in Spring 2026, with pricing starting at $1,300. Pioneer also offers other aftermarket head units that support CarPlay.
