U.S. Citizen Detained in China on Suspicion of Espionage
Beijing — Chinese authorities have detained a U.S. citizen upon his arrival at Kunming airport, accusing him of espionage and endangering national security, according to official statements and sources familiar with the case.

On June 3, Min Zin was detained after landing at Kunming airport in Yunnan province. He had traveled to the city at the invitation of a Chinese academic institution, sources said.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian confirmed the arrest on Friday, stating that Min Zin is under investigation for suspected espionage activities that threaten China's national security.
The Individual
Min Zin is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, and serves as executive director of the Institute for Strategy and Policy-Myanmar (ISP-Myanmar), a think tank focused on Myanmar affairs.
His background includes:
- Student activism in Myanmar's 1988 democracy movement
- Years in exile before returning to Myanmar in 2013
- Research on Myanmar-China relations and conflict dynamics following the 2021 military coup
International Response
The U.S. State Department confirmed awareness of reports regarding a U.S. citizen detained in China but declined to provide further details.
"We will work to provide consular assistance," a State Department spokesperson stated.
Both ISP-Myanmar and Min Zin's wife have declined to comment on the case.
