The shooting began around 8 a.m. local time in the 4600 block of West Wall Street. Responding officers heard gunfire coming from a building and deployed armored units. The suspect barricaded himself, leading to a standoff with police.

Using drones and a robot, law enforcement confirmed Villarreal's death around 11:30 a.m. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.

The deceased victim was identified as Ed Scott, a city employee of Midland.
Midland Memorial Hospital received nine victims: four underwent surgery, five were listed as stable. According to hospital spokesperson Tasa Richardson, three additional individuals were treated and released.

Suspect Background

According to authorities, Villarreal, an Odessa resident, was wanted for attempted capital murder. Law enforcement stated that he allegedly shot at a police officer with a rifle during a traffic stop on Wednesday. The officer was not injured and was placed on administrative leave.

Villarreal had prior firearm-related charges, including a 2009 conviction for unlawfully carrying a firearm and dismissed charges in 2003 and 2004 for similar offenses. A motive for the shooting has not been confirmed.
