Instagram Expands Feed Personalization, Letting Users Choose Topics
Instagram has rolled out an updated algorithm personalization feature for its main feed, giving users the ability to specify which topics they want to see more or less of in their recommendations. The change was announced by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri on Threads.
"The goal is to give users more agency over their experience," Mosseri stated.
Key Details
The feature currently works only with interest-based topics — such as "rescue dogs" or "parenting humor." However, requests for "posts from people I follow" return an error: "no results found."
Mosseri acknowledged that the 'following' tool has become less effective as recommendations now dominate the feed. Instagram offers a separate, dedicated "following" feed alongside the main recommendations feed.
Technical Direction
Mosseri attributed the new personalization features to large language models, and said the company is working on supporting requests for people, moods, content types, and more in the future.
