YouTube is expanding the rollout of a new in-app messaging system, which was tested last year. The feature allows users to share videos, Shorts, or livestreams and have 1:1 conversations.
Key Details
- A new messaging icon will appear in the top-right corner of the YouTube app.
- Users can only message a person after sending an invite link via a third-party chat platform. The link is valid for 7 days.
- Recipients must accept messaging by selecting "Allow messaging" or "Not now" upon clicking the link.
- Messaging is designed for conversations with known contacts, not the broader YouTube audience.
- Unlisted video links can be shared, but private videos cannot.
- The feature is only available to users aged 18 and older.
- Community Guidelines apply to all shared content and messages. Users can unsend messages, block users, and report conversations.
- When watching a video, the Share menu will show available contacts. Notifications are sent for new messages.
Background
YouTube started testing messaging in November across Europe. The new rollout includes users in the US, UK, Brazil, and Singapore.
YouTube previously offered messaging until removing it in 2019; the company states this was a "top feature request."
