RecipeTin Eats founder Nagi Maehashi adopts new golden retriever Jaffle as chief taste tester

Nagi Maehashi, founder of RecipeTin Eats, has adopted a golden retriever puppy named Jaffle to serve as her new chief taste tester, following the death of her previous dog Dozer earlier this year.

"To be honest I wasn't sure when I'd be ready."

A New Chapter After Loss

Maehashi announced the passing of her golden retriever Dozer in February 2024. Dozer, nearly 14 years old, was a central figure in the RecipeTin Eats brand and taste-tested Maehashi's recipes.

Jaffle is the offspring of a canine friend of Dozer's. Maehashi stated she did not expect to get a new dog so soon after Dozer's death but felt ready when she met Jaffle.

Passing the Baton

Maehashi described Jaffle as a "chunky chunderbum of a boy, destined to be big and gold." She said she views this as "passing the baton to the next generation" rather than replacing Dozer.

Training has begun, including lessons not to steal food. Maehashi reported Jaffle shows promise as chief taste tester, with an early passion for cheese and distaste for kale.

Expert Commentary on Pet Loss

Sajee Wijesena, a grief counselor, stated there is no right or wrong time to get another dog after a loss. She noted that bonding with a new pet can improve mental state.

Tracey Taylor, a dog trainer and PhD candidate, advised considering life changes such as age, responsibilities, and living arrangements before adopting a new dog. She emphasized that "every dog is a study of one."
