Playground Games presented a hands-off demo of the upcoming Fable reboot during the Xbox Games Showcase at Summer Game Fest.

The demonstration was narrated by Associate Game Directors Craig Littler and William Kennedy. The game is scheduled for release on February 23, 2027.

Release Platforms

The title will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Game Pass, Xbox PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5. Pre-orders are open.

Living Population and Reputation

The game world features over 1,000 individually crafted NPCs, each with unique personalities and preferences.

Player actions generate reputation tags visible in the user interface, such as +Virtuous, +Killer, or +Kind. These tags influence NPC behavior and town perceptions. Different NPCs may react differently to the same reputation trait; one NPC might dislike shrewdness while another may appreciate it.

Dating and Economy

Players can initiate romantic relationships with adult NPCs. Relationship eligibility is determined by specific criteria, which may include owning a home, operating a business, or wearing particular attire. Criteria vary by NPC.

The game includes an economic system where players can earn gold through jobs (e.g., blacksmithing), purchase and manage businesses, and become landlords. Hiring employees requires recruiting NPCs who hold a positive opinion of the player.

Combat and World

Combat retains the series' red, blue, and green orb system for chaining attacks. Magic options include force push, force pull, fire, and shock spells. Animations are described as more vibrant than previous titles.

The game world includes over 120 shops and a detailed map with terrain and points of interest. NPCs are voiced by over 100 actors.

Story and Cast

Specific plot details have not been released. Confirmed cast members include Hayley Atwell as the villain Isabel, Richard Ayoade as Dave the Giant, and a tease of the character Jack of Blades.

Player Agency

William Kennedy stated:

"If you just want to engage with the action-adventure, that's totally cool. And we also have a really complex, interconnected set of systems that allow you to play and tinker with those thousand NPCs however you like."

Craig Littler commented on relationships:

"Yes, you could get into a relationship with anybody, but not at the same time, because you can't be all things to all people at the same time."

The original Fable trilogy is available on Xbox Game Pass.
