An exhibition of Cartier jewelry is being held at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne as part of the Winter Masterpieces series. The exhibition features nearly 400 pieces, including over 30 tiaras, and runs until October 4.
Exhibition Details
Presented in partnership with London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), the exhibition showcases almost 300 items that have not been publicly exhibited in Australia previously.
The collection includes items previously owned or worn by Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Princess Margaret, Rihanna, and Andy Warhol. The exhibition explores the history of the Cartier brand from a small Parisian business to a global jeweler, with pieces inspired by the natural world.
Local Connection
Items worn by Australian opera singer Dame Nellie Melba are included in the exhibition. Melba was a customer of Cartier in the early 20th century. Jewels she wore in 1902 during a performance at the Melbourne Town Hall are on display.
Statements
"Cartier is one of the world's most artistic jewelry houses," said V&A senior curator Helen Molesworth, characterizing jewelry as an art form.
NGV senior curator Miranda Wallace said the objects provide insight into the social and political context of the 20th century.

Security and Valuation
The jewels were transported under conditions of secrecy. NGV staff stated that security measures meet global standards. Exhibition organizers declined to provide a total value, describing the collection as "priceless."
