Burning Cross Discovered in Grant Park; Arson Investigation Underway
Chicago – Firefighters responded to a reported fire at the intersection of Columbus and Balbo drives in Grant Park on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. Upon arrival, the Chicago Fire Department discovered and extinguished a burning cross. A mother and daughter at the scene captured video of the incident.
Investigation Launched
The Chicago Police Department has released a photo of a person of interest seen fleeing the scene. Authorities have not confirmed whether the footage in question shows the act itself. The incident is being investigated as an arson.
The FBI has also joined the investigation, stating they take potential bias-motivated incidents seriously.
Community Leaders Respond
The act has drawn swift condemnation from local religious and civic leaders:
- Rev. Michael L. Pfleger of Saint Sabina announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. He called the act premeditated and a symbol of hate.
- Yusef Jackson of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition stated that the image of a burning cross brings terror and is beneath society's dignity.
- Mayor Brandon Johnson's office condemned the act, declaring that hate has no place in Chicago.
- Cardinal Blase Cupich condemned the burning cross as a dramatic expression of hatred and called for redoubled efforts against hate.
