BBC Sport Expert and AI Issue Predictions for 2026 World Cup Opening Group Matches

View source

BBC Sport football expert Chris Sutton and an AI have generated predictions for the opening round of group matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The predictions cover the first game in each of the tournament's 16 groups, including the opening match between co-hosts Mexico and South Africa. Also covered are matches featuring holders Argentina against Algeria, and England versus Croatia.

The AI, which operates using Microsoft Copilot Chat and finished top of the BBC's Premier League Predictions League in the previous season, was given the instruction to "predict the results of the opening round of World Cup group games."

The predictions form part of a broader set of forecasts by Sutton and the AI for all 104 matches in the tournament.

A new prediction game has been launched on the BBC Sport website, allowing readers to select their own winners or draws for any match in the competition.
