Spielberg's Misplaced Text Unlocks O'Connor's Emotional Scene
A Late-Night Message, An Artistic Revelation
Actor Josh O'Connor has shared an unusual story from the set of 'Disclosure Day'. During filming, he received a late-night text from director Steven Spielberg.
"The door is on the latch, just push."
O'Connor interpreted the message as profound acting advice. "It unlocked the whole scene for me," he said. "It's like the emotions, just push the door, let it out. And I was like, 'It's genius. It's beautiful. It's poetical.'"
The following day, Spielberg revealed the truth: the text was intended for his wife, not his actor. He allowed the story to be shared regardless.
Preparation Through Art and Labor
For his role, O'Connor created a scrapbook and charcoal drawings inspired by the character in 'Close Encounters'.
His commitment to authenticity extended to the film 'God's Own Country'. Before filming began, he worked on a real farm. During breaks, he continued farm duties.
"There were no film cameras, nothing. I was there living and working with John, the farmer. And then at some point, the film crew turn up and I'm no longer his farm hand."
Reluctance and Royalty
O'Connor discussed his hesitation to play Prince Charles in 'The Crown'. The role tempted him only after creator Peter Morgan described the character as "waiting for his mother to die in order for his life to take meaning."
Despite the role, O'Connor holds complex views on the institution.
"I believe in a more equal society and the construct of a monarchy makes that very difficult."
The Cost of Performance
The actor revealed a personal pattern that follows intense projects. He often feels grief at the end of a project and gets sick after wrapping.
