Mississippi Couple Forced Out Over Unresolved Maintenance Issues
Aliea Brown, 41, and Mason Obradovich, 39, were required to leave their rental unit at Buck Island Manufactured Home Community in Mississippi by April 30, 2024. The park's owner, Homes of America, decided to transition the property to a community where residents must own their units.
"We had nowhere else to go."
Brown reported multiple maintenance issues in Unit 62 since renting in 2023. The problems included:
- An upside-down front door
- Black mold growth
- Improper window seals
- Pest infestations
In winter, a sewer pipe burst, causing wastewater to collect under the home and generating a strong odor. Brown said repairs were repeatedly requested but not completed.
In February 2024, Homes of America notified Brown that repair costs exceeded the unit's value. The company offered to sell the dilapidated unit to her for $1,000, partially funded by her security deposit.
Brown declined due to lack of funds and poor credit, citing a disability (COPD). The couple stated they had nowhere else to go.
