Oakland Roots Star Scores Olympic Goal, Reveals Surprising World Cup Alliance

"I make the joke with the goalkeepers that he's a very nice guy. Meeting him was a surreal experience."
— Jesus De Vicente, on meeting Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan

The Unlikely Connection

Oakland Roots left back Jesus De Vicente delivered a moment of magic in a recent 2-0 victory over Las Vegas Lights, scoring an Olympic goal directly from a corner kick. But beyond the highlight-reel strike, De Vicente is making headlines for an unexpected international bond formed at the club's own training facility.

The Spanish defender recently met Australian national team goalkeeper Mat Ryan during the Socceroos' training camp at the Oakland Roots and Soul Sports Club. The connection runs deeper than a simple stadium tour: their mothers worked together through medical services at Levante in Spain.

Ryan, who currently plays for Levante, hails from a club in the same region as De Vicente's hometown of Valencia—making De Vicente a self-described Valencia CF fan.

A Shared World Cup Passion

De Vicente made clear that his respect for the Australian side goes beyond a casual acquaintance.

"I saw them training, and they are very serious and professional," he said. "I'm supporting Australia, and of course Spain, in the World Cup. We have a connection now because of Mat."

The Training Facility: A World Cup Hub

The Oakland Roots and Soul Sports Club has become the official training base for the Socceroos' World Cup campaign. The site, formerly the home of the NFL's Raiders, offers top-tier amenities that have drawn international attention.

Turf manager Marc Logan, with 40 years of turf management experience, oversees the playing surface. He uses a specialized product called Mineral Magic, mined in Western Australia, to keep the pitch in pristine condition. Logan noted that the consistent northern California weather makes grass maintenance remarkably easy.

The facility has also been rented to other international teams and NFL teams for summer camps, cementing its reputation as a premier training destination.
