Google Slashes AI Plus Price, Doubles Storage

Google announced on Monday that it is reducing the monthly price of Google AI Plus from $7.99 to $4.99, while doubling the included storage from 200 GB to 400 GB.

Vikas Kansal, product lead for Gemini AI subscriptions, stated on X that the storage updates will roll out to users over several days.

Key Details

  • Google AI Plus launched in January as the most affordable paid AI subscription in the US market, aimed at individual users and students.
  • The plan includes features such as video generation via Omni Flash, Google Flow, and NotebookLM.
  • Google also offers AI Pro and AI Ultra at higher price points.

Background

  • The price cut follows similar moves in emerging markets. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Go in India at about $4.60/month in August. Google introduced a sub-$5 AI Plus plan in India in December.
  • Anthropic has not introduced localized pricing for India or a budget tier elsewhere.

Expert Comment

Chi-Hua Chien, co-founder and managing partner at Goodwater Capital, commented that the announcement signals commoditization of AI infrastructure. He noted that historically, infrastructure companies in tech shifts get commoditized over time.

He cited examples from the web era and predicted similar dynamics for AI infrastructure, including frontier model providers like OpenAI and Anthropic. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have filed confidentially to go public.
