2026 Australian Swimming Trials: First Athletes Selected for Pan-Pac and Commonwealth Teams

After the first day of the 2026 Australian Swimming Trials in Sydney, the initial group of athletes has been nominated for the Pan-Pacific Championships and the Commonwealth Games.

Selection Criteria Overview

Pan-Pacific Championships

  • Total team size: 56 athletes (28 women, 28 men).
  • Priority 1: Top two finishers in each individual event.
  • Priority 2: Athletes selected to fill relays, with medley relays prioritizing top swimmers in 100m events and freestyle relays potentially selecting athletes ranked 3rd–8th, considering past relay performance.
  • Priority 3: Athletes under the qualifying time not already selected via Priority 1 or 2.
  • Important: Selection for Priority 2 and 3 is at the sole discretion of the Swimming Australia Selection Committee.

Commonwealth Games

  • Maximum team size: 42 athletes; no specified gender breakdown.
  • Priority 1: Top two finishers in each individual event.
  • Priority 2: The highest-ranked athlete in 100m stroke events; top three placed eligible athletes in 100m and 200m freestyle may be nominated, with the 4th-place eligible as a relay-only swimmer.
  • Priority 3: Remaining roster spots filled by athletes under the qualifying time not already selected via Priority 1 or 2, limited to the 3rd-place finisher.
  • Additional nomination criteria include:
    • Confidence that the athlete will be competitive.
    • Demonstrated good behavior and commitment to training.
    • Demonstrated compatibility with others in a team environment.
  • Important: Selection for Priority 2 and 3 is at the sole discretion of the Swimming Australia Selection Committee.
  • Note: Priority 3 athletes are ranked against top non-Australian athletes globally, with a limit of three athletes per nation in the ranking.
