Pope Leo XIV to Visit Barcelona’s Montserrat and Sagrada Familia in June 2026

Pope Leo XIV will visit Montserrat monastery and the Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona on June 10, 2026, as part of a seven-day trip to Spain. The visit commemorates the centennial of architect Antoni Gaudí's death.

Itinerary and Highlights

The pope will first visit Montserrat, a Benedictine abbey complex that includes an 11th-century monastery and a 16th-century basilica, home to the revered Black Madonna statue.

"Montserrat is a key to Catalan culture, and the Black Madonna is a beloved representation of Mary."
— Francesc Torralba, Catalan theologian

He will then celebrate Mass at the Sagrada Familia, a basilica under construction since 1882, designed by Gaudí. The basilica recently became the world's tallest church with the completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ.

Tourism and Impact

The Sagrada Familia is a major tourist attraction, with 90% of its visitors being foreigners. The previous papal visit by Benedict XVI in 2010 boosted annual visitors from about 3 million to nearly 5 million.

Xavier Martínez, CEO of the Sagrada Familia construction project, predicted the Mass would boost tourism similar to 2010.

Local Context and Challenges

Spain has a declining Catholic population; about 50% of Spaniards identify as Catholic, with only 20% practicing. Montserrat is considered a spiritual center for Catalonia.

"The Sagrada Familia expresses complex ideas in an accessible way."
— Ferran Sáez, professor at Ramón Llull University

Rev. Josep Turull, rector of Sagrada Familia, acknowledged potential friction between tourism and local parishioners but described it as "growing pains."

A Little-Known Connection

Tour guide Mònica Santín noted a fascinating historical link: Gaudí apprenticed with an architect who worked on Montserrat's chapel and later passed the Sagrada Familia commission to Gaudí.
