Walk for Him: Como Local Brian Harris Takes on Prostate Cancer Challenge

Como resident Brian Harris will participate in the national "Walk for Him" challenge during Men's Health Week (June 15–21, 2026), raising funds and awareness for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) after his own diagnosis.

A Personal Mission
Harris, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer, has already walked over 170 km as part of the initiative, which encourages Australians to walk 25 km—or any distance of their choice. His personal walking target is 200 km, a goal set partly on his specialist’s advice to lose weight.

"Support for men is limited, and prostate cancer and its treatments are not well understood."

Fundraising Success
He initially set a fundraising target of $500, later increased it to $1,500, and has now raised over $1,788, with donations still coming in.

Diagnosis and Health Journey
Now 65, Harris's cancer was detected early following a PET scan and biopsy. He is currently under a "watch and act" program involving regular blood tests and scans. His best friend was also diagnosed with prostate cancer and received radiation treatment with seed implants.

The Mental Toll
Harris shared that the mental aspect of the diagnosis was challenging, even with early detection, and that he received support from a mentor. He advised men to prioritize their health, consult a GP, get appropriate tests, and seek support. He also noted the significant costs associated with treatments not covered by Medicare or private health insurance.

The Bigger Picture
According to the PCFA, nearly 29,000 Australian men are newly diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, and nearly 4,000 men die from the disease annually.

Call to Action
Locals are encouraged to support Harris or join the Walk for Him challenge.

PCFA CEO Anne Savage called on the Como community to participate, stating that Walk for Him helps raise awareness and funds for research, nursing, and support services.
