York Man, 95, Recalls Idyllic Childhood in Town Hall Home

"He met his wife, Margaret Salkilld, at a dance in the hall, and they were later married there."

Brian Baker, 95, was born in York, Western Australia, on December 2, 1930. His childhood was anything but ordinary.

His father served as caretaker of the York Town Hall for 30 years, and the family lived in quarters within the building. Baker recently shared memories of this unique upbringing during a visit.

He described an idyllic childhood, including sliding down the banisters with his brother and riding in a homemade floor-polishing device.

A Life Shaped by the Hall

The Town Hall played a central role in Baker’s life. He met his wife, Margaret Salkilld, at a dance in the hall, and they were later married there.

He played for the York Football Club and captained the premiership-winning team in 1954.

Following his marriage, Baker worked as a town clerk in various locations and also served in the air force.

A Return Home

After 64 years away, Baker returned to York three years ago.

“It’s wonderful to be back,” he said.
