A 55-mile rite of passage: Freshmen hike the Appalachian Trail to earn sophomore status.
A Mandatory Challenge in the Great Outdoors
St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey, requires all freshmen to complete a 55-mile hike on the Appalachian Trail as a mandatory rite of passage. The program, now in its 53rd year, is designed to push students beyond their comfort zones.
Students begin training in early spring, preparing for the physical demands of the trail. Once the hike begins, they are assigned specific roles, including captain, navigator, cook, and medic.
Learning Through Leadership and Teamwork
"The hike is intended to teach teamwork and reliance on one another."
According to school administrator Glenn Cassidy, the students hike with some adult supervision. The experience is structured to foster collaboration and mutual support, rather than individual competition.
Students who completed the hike in May officially became sophomores. This transition marks the end of their freshman year and the beginning of their next stage at the school.
