The Second Chance Choir: Finding Hope and Community Through Song
Based in Perth's north, the Second Chance Choir is a community singing group that provides a supportive, non-invasive environment for individuals with backgrounds in prison, addiction, and trauma.
Founded in 2022 by Jade Lewis, the choir offers a unique pathway for its members. "It provides a pathway to hope, dignity, and community," Lewis explained, contrasting it with programs that merely manage behavior.
"The choir gave me a second chance at life." – Ryan Brownhill
A Safe Space for All
The choir is open to everyone, with many members being former offenders or those recovering from addiction. Central to their weekly sessions is the hymn "Amazing Grace." The environment is built on support, dignity, and community, offering an alternative approach to traditional behavioral programs.
Stories of Transformation
- Ryan Brownhill began using drugs at 15 and became addicted to amphetamines. He discovered the choir through his church after getting clean at 25. He now hopes to inspire others, stating the choir gave him a second chance.
- Valeria Mazza endured a traumatic childhood with family violence, spent two decades addicted to drugs, had three children taken from her, and was jailed four times. She met Jade Lewis during prison mentoring. Upon her final release in 2014, she credited the ongoing support from a network of women, including choir members, for helping her avoid relapse. She has since restored relationships with her children and works as a registered nurse.
- Jake Baker joined after multiple prison terms. He noted that the choir offers an alternative model of masculinity, encouraging vulnerability rather than bravado.
Founder's Personal Journey
Jade Lewis first conceived the idea in 2009 while working in a women's prison. She admitted initial reluctance to work with offenders, which changed after she reflected on her own recovery from trauma and addiction. She now hopes for more initiatives like the Second Chance Choir across Western Australia.
