Amazon Launches AI-Generated Product Images in Search Results

Amazon has updated its shopping app with a feature that displays AI-generated product images in search results. The images appear below autocomplete suggestions when users enter descriptive search terms and are intended to help customers find visually similar real products. The feature is currently available for apparel and home categories on Amazon's Android and iOS apps.

"The AI images are not photographs of actual products, but computer-generated visuals designed to match the user's description."

Function and User Experience

When a user types a descriptive search query—such as "blue gingham dress" or "shirt with draped collar"—AI-generated images appear in the search interface. Tapping on an AI-generated image directs the user to search results featuring real purchasable items that are visually similar, powered by Amazon's visual search technology.

Amazon has stated the feature is designed to assist customers who may not know specific product names or technical terms. For example, a user searching for a "shirt with draped collar" may see generated images without needing to know the term "cowl neck."

Related AI Features

The image generation feature is part of a broader rollout of AI-based tools by Amazon. Additional features include:

  • AI-generated shoppable collages ("shop by style") that suggest outfits using real purchasable items
  • AI-summarized customer reviews
  • Short audio product summaries
  • Amazon Lens Live for visual search in real-world settings
  • Lens integration with a homescreen shortcut and circle-to-search functionality
  • The ability to add text to image searches
  • A "more like this" shortcut in search results
  • A lock screen visual search widget for iOS devices

Earlier this month, Amazon replaced its Rufus AI chatbot with Alexa for Shopping to handle natural language shopping queries.

Criticism and Concerns

Some critics have noted that generating fake product images may confuse customers who cannot find the exact item shown.

Concerns have also been raised about potential resource waste associated with generating AI images.
