Black Crowes Concert Erupts in Tension Over "U.S.A." Chants
Tampa, FL – A Black Crowes show took an unexpected political turn on May 31, leading to a heated exchange between frontman Chris Robinson and a portion of the audience.
The incident occurred near the end of the concert when the band displayed their mascot, dressed as Uncle Sam, on a large screen. Some audience members responded by starting a "U.S.A." chant.
"Thanks for the geography lesson."
Frontman Chris Robinson directly addressed the chants with critical remarks. According to a report by TMZ, his comments included, "Thanks for the geography lesson" and "I don't know what you have to be so proud of right now."
The crowd's reaction was sharply divided. Videos posted online captured a mix of loud boos and supportive cheers.
Robinson escalated his response, telling the audience:
"For those of you fucking booing us, some of us are not afraid. And we most assuredly are not fucking ignorant!"
Following the verbal confrontation, some audience members chose to leave the venue. The band, however, continued to perform.
Artist's Stance vs. Onstage Comments
Robinson’s public criticism of the chants appears to contrast with a previously stated position. In a prior interview with Mojo, Robinson said:
"I'm not interested in politics. I'm more interested in poetry and art and people and experience."
He added, "I know right and wrong."
At the time of publication, a representative for the Black Crowes did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Rolling Stone.
