The Last Local Named Finalist in WA’s Best Steak Sandwich Competition

A Canning Vale pub is in the running for one of Western Australia’s most prestigious pub-food titles.

The Last Local has been named a finalist in the AHA and Little Creatures WA’s Best Steak Sandwich competition, going head-to-head with three other venues for the top prize.

"We prioritise quality cuts of meat and quality products... we haven't raised our prices."
— Mickey Phull, owner of The Last Local

The Contenders

The four finalists will face off in a live cook-off on July 1, where judges will assess meat tenderness, presentation, originality, sauces, flavour, value, and accompanying sides.

  • The Last Local (Canning Vale): $31 crunch sandwich with scotch fillet on toasted sourdough, crispy bacon, crunchy onions, smoky aioli, rocket, tomato, melted cheese, and chips.
  • Carrington's Bar and Grill (Hamilton Hill): Scotch fillet on toasted Turkish panini with bacon, Swiss cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato, gherkin, BBQ chimichurri aioli, tomato relish, jalapeño cheeseball, and chips.
  • Sorrento Beach Club: MB2+ O'Connor picanha steak on ciabatta with creamy entrecôte sauce, crispy red onions, and parmesan.
  • Stirling Arms Hotel (Guildford): Slow-braised beef rib sandwich with mustard onions, pecorino, air-dried salted tomatoes, sweet pickles, and rocket on house-made focaccia.

Industry Praise

Bradley Woods, CEO of Australian Hotels Association WA, said the competition continues to showcase the state’s culinary talent.

"Every year we see venues and chefs push the boundaries with creativity, quality and fangability... The steak sandwich is a true pub classic but in WA it has become an iconic showcase of the talent and passion within our industry."

The live cook-off will determine the ultimate winner, with all four finalists vying for the title of WA’s Best Steak Sandwich.
