Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 Remakes Reportedly in Development

The Rumor
A PC Gamer report suggests that remakes of the classic RPGs Baldur's Gate (1998) and Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (2000) are currently in development at Wizards of the Coast.

The report indicates that former BioWare developer Kevin Martens, co-lead designer of Baldur's Gate 2, is involved in the project.

According to the source, both remakes may be launched simultaneously.

The Official Response
When asked for comment, Hasbro—Wizards of the Coast's parent company—issued a standard statement:

"We do not comment on speculation or rumor."

Background & Context
The original Baldur's Gate titles were developed by BioWare and published by Interplay. They are celebrated for their isometric perspective and pausable real-time combat system, which allows players to control a party of up to six characters.

Key unknowns about the remakes include their scope and whether they will adopt turn-based combat, similar to Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3, or stick with the original real-time formula.

A critical detail: Larian Studios, the developer behind the 2023 hit Baldur's Gate 3, has already moved on to other projects. This means the next Baldur's Gate title—whether a remake or new entry—will be handled by a different developer.
