Rick Adelman, Hall of Fame Coach, Dies at 79
Former NBA player and Hall of Fame coach Rick Adelman has died at the age of 79. The National Basketball Coaches Association announced his death on Monday. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Playing Career
Adelman played seven seasons in the NBA as a point guard from 1969 to 1975. He played for five teams, including the Portland Trail Blazers (1970–1973).
Coaching Career
Adelman began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers from 1983 to 1988. He served as the team's head coach from 1988 to 1994, leading the Trail Blazers to the NBA Finals in 1990 and 1992.
He subsequently served as head coach for the following teams:
- Golden State Warriors (1995–1997)
- Sacramento Kings (1998–2006)
- Houston Rockets (2007–2011)
- Minnesota Timberwolves (2011–2014)
Adelman's career coaching record stands at 1,042 wins and 749 losses. He ranks 10th on the NBA's all-time wins list and is one of 11 coaches to have achieved over 1,000 victories. According to multiple sources, only four coaches (Pat Riley, Gregg Popovich, Jerry Sloan, and George Karl) had more wins and a higher winning percentage.
Honors and Recognition
Adelman was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021. He received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.

Survivors
Adelman is survived by his wife, Mary Kay, and six children. His son, David Adelman, is the head coach of the Denver Nuggets.
