A former police officer in Shelby, North Carolina, has been charged with assault following an incident that was captured on video. The officer, Karson Hyder, 22, was arrested and released on bond, and has since been fired from the police department. The woman involved, Cherrie Moore, 34, was initially charged with multiple offenses, some of which have since been dismissed.

The altercation occurred on Friday in Shelby, North Carolina, while officers were responding to a call regarding a breaking and entering. According to court warrants, Moore fled on foot and resisted arrest, reportedly assaulting Hyder by grabbing and ripping his uniform.
A separate warrant alleges that Hyder then grabbed Moore by the arm, pushed her to the ground, and struck her in the face with a closed fist. The incident was recorded on a doorbell camera, which shows Hyder repeatedly punching Moore. Reports indicate Moore sustained injuries including a possible broken nose and busted lip.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Karson Hyder was charged on Monday with one count of assault inflicting serious injury by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). He turned himself in and was processed at the Cleveland County Detention Center before being released on a $10,000 secured bond. Court records do not list an attorney for Hyder.
Cherrie Moore was initially charged with misdemeanor breaking or entering, resisting arrest, and assault on a government official or employee. The latter two charges have been dismissed. Court records indicate Moore still faces one pending charge of misdemeanor breaking or entering, with a court hearing scheduled.

Employment Status
The Shelby Police Department suspended Hyder on Friday and subsequently fired him on Saturday following an internal administrative investigation. Chief Brad Fraser stated that Hyder's actions were "disturbing and inappropriate" during a press briefing.

Court records show that Hyder had previously arrested Moore in August 2025 on charges of breaking or entering and resisting a public officer. Moore pleaded guilty to resisting a public officer in that incident and was sentenced to time served.

The North Carolina SBI opened an investigation into Hyder on Saturday.
Moore's attorney, Ronald Haynes, stated that Moore is recovering and receiving treatment for her mental health. Moore's father, Gregory Moore, stated that his daughter has bipolar schizophrenia and that the officer's actions involved excessive force. Moore's uncle, Michael Moore, expressed relief at the charging decision.
