Roadside Stalls Bring Homemade Goods to the Adelaide Hills

A grassroots network of roadside stalls, selling everything from sourdough bread to fresh flowers, has become a beloved feature of the Adelaide Hills region in South Australia. A dedicated Facebook group tracking these stalls has swelled to over 45,000 members, and a new interactive map now makes finding them even easier.

The Rise of the Side Hustle

Elise McCallum began selling sourdough bread from a roadside stall during the pandemic. What started as a single loaf quickly grew into a weekly success. She now consistently sells several dozen loaves each weekend.

The movement is largely fueled by side businesses. Natasha Trimper sells locally grown fresh flowers from a stall near her home in Mount Barker. She grows most of the flowers herself and uses trimmings from neighbors' gardens to keep costs low. McCallum started her bakery during maternity leave, while Trimper began by selling from her garage.

Community & Trust

The stalls run largely on an honor system, but the approach to security varies.

"Most people are honest," McCallum said, noting that she uses security cameras to monitor her stall.

In contrast, Trimper operates without any surveillance. Neighbors appreciated the absence of cameras at her stall, reflecting a positive, trusting community response.

The dedicated Facebook group, "Adelaide Hills Roadside Stalls," serves as a central hub. Stallholders post product details, while customers use it to plan their weekend routes to find the best local goods.
