Virgin Australia COVID-19 Flight Credits Expire June 30, Qantas Offers Refunds Instead

View source

Key deadline: Virgin Australia customers holding COVID-19-related flight credits must book and travel by June 30, 2025, or forfeit the credit entirely.

Credits issued between April 21, 2020, and July 31, 2022 remain at risk. The airline reports that over 90% of credits have been claimed, but approximately $93 million remains unclaimed as of late February.

Qantas and Jetstar Take Different Approach

Qantas originally allowed COVID-19 flight credits not to expire but has now changed its policy. Customers must now call to request a refund for credits from bookings made on or before September 30, 2021. Jetstar, a subsidiary, also extended its COVID credit validity without expiration.

Consumer Group Criticizes Virgin Policy

Consumer advocacy group Choice criticized Virgin for not offering refunds, arguing that many customers no longer have a need to travel. Virgin responded that credits are easy to use and can be transferred to friends or family for any Virgin or partner airline flight.

Qantas Refund Process

Qantas explained that refunds are not automatic because most credit cards from the original bookings have expired, making direct reimbursement impractical.
