Shots Fired During Welfare Check: Deputy Killed, Suspect at Large

The Incident
On Friday night, deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office responded to a welfare check request at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway. Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with the subject, Michael Puckett, who opened fire on them. Both deputies returned fire.
Casualties
- Deputy Logan Utt sustained fatal injuries and was killed in the line of duty.
- A second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently in stable condition.
Suspect
Michael Puckett fled the scene and remains at large. He is considered armed and dangerous. The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
Investigation
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Wytheville Field Office, is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
