A Rare Celestial Event Lights Up the Sky Over Guangzhou

On May 31, a "calendar blue moon" will grace the night sky —defined as the second full moon occurring within a single calendar month. This phenomenon is a product of the 29.5-day lunar cycle, making it a relatively rare event that happens only once every two to three years. The next calendar blue moon is not expected until 2029.

Adding to the uniqueness of the night, this full moon will also be a "mini-moon." The moon will reach apogee—its farthest point from Earth—on June 1, causing it to appear approximately 5.5% smaller and 10.5% dimmer than an average full moon.

Viewing Tips for Guangzhou

For the best experience in Guangzhou, note that the moon will rise at 19:17 on May 31. Optimal viewing is recommended 30 to 60 minutes after moonrise, when the moon is low on the horizon and takes on a striking orange-yellow hue.
