Incident at Wicked Premiere Leads to Jail Time, Sparks Debate on Race

The Incident

At the Singapore premiere of Wicked: For Good, an individual named Johnson Wen jumped a barrier and grabbed co-star Ariana Grande. Cynthia Erivo intervened, physically pushing the individual away.

"She would not let go of Grande."

Wen, who has a history of disrupting public events, was sentenced to nine days in jail. Erivo stated that she and Grande were "terrified" by the attack.

A Deeper Reckoning

Erivo has since spoken out about the wider implications of the incident, arguing it revealed "the insidious nature of how we view Black women."

She noted that social media reactions included suggestions that she was Grande's "bodyguard."

Assumptions were made based on her physique, baldness, and appearance. She was perceived as bigger and more protective.

Erivo suggested that the reaction would have been different had the roles been reversed.

Impact on Oscar Campaigning

Erivo said she felt her humanity had been "bastardised" by the public's reaction to her protective instincts. She expressed reluctance to campaign for Oscars for Wicked: For Good due to the incident's aftermath.

"I do not want to put myself through it. I felt I did not deserve it."

Box Office Performance

The first Wicked film grossed $765 million worldwide and won two Oscars. The sequel, Wicked: For Good, has grossed $541 million but received no Oscar nominations.
