$500 Million Howard Smith Wharves Redevelopment Approved Ahead of 2032 Games

The Artemus Group has received official approval for a major redevelopment of the Howard Smith Wharves precinct in Brisbane, setting the stage for a significant transformation before the city hosts the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A Landmark Transformation

The ambitious project will introduce a 106-room boutique hotel, featuring Brisbane’s first over-river pool. Key infrastructure additions include two cliffside lifts, redesigned pontoon infrastructure, and cascading riverfront stairs designed to improve access and flow.

The outdoor public space will increase by approximately 30% , adding 8,500 square metres of new usable area.

Enhancements are also planned for the popular Felons Barrel Hall, ensuring the precinct remains a vibrant destination for both locals and visitors. The total cost of the redevelopment is estimated at $500 million.

Strategic Timing for the Olympic Games

Stakeholders have highlighted the project’s alignment with Brisbane’s global moment in the spotlight.

"The timing is significant for the 2032 Games," said Howard Smith Wharves founder Adam Flaskas. "This project positions the precinct as a centerpiece for the city."

CEO Luke Fraser described the approval as a "defining moment," noting that every decision was guided by a single goal: "Creating something Brisbane would be proud to show the world."

Economic and Community Impact

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner praised the development for its potential economic impact, particularly in job creation and tourism. He reflected on the site’s remarkable evolution, stating that it marks a "transformation from a derelict wharf" into a world-class public asset.

Completion of the entire precinct is scheduled for before the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
