Supercars DSA Reprimanded Over “Grub” Comment

Craig Baird has been formally reprimanded and forced to apologize after making inflammatory remarks about a driver involved in a championship-deciding incident.

The Incident

During the opening lap of the season-ending Adelaide 500, Ryan Wood (Walkinshaw TWG Racing) made contact with championship contender Broc Feeney, causing Feeney to spin.

  • Feeney finished the race in 20th position.
  • Wood received a 15-second time penalty.
  • Chaz Mostert ultimately won the championship.

The Comments

Prior to the race, Supercars Driving Standards Advisor (DSA) Craig Baird told Code Sports he had predicted Wood would attempt an overtaking move on Feeney. Following the incident, Baird characterized Wood's actions as "a bit of a grub."

Baird confirmed he had raised his concerns about the potential for the incident with race stewards and other officials before the race began.

Reprimand and Apology

"His comments were outside the boundaries of his role as DSA and were unacceptable."

Walkinshaw TWG Racing formally objected to Baird's remarks, leading to meetings between Baird, Supercars officials, and Motorsport Australia. The outcome was swift and decisive:

  • Motorsport Australia issued a formal apology to Wood and Walkinshaw TWG Racing.
  • Baird was reprimanded for breaching professional standards.
  • Baird issued a formal retraction and apology, acknowledging that his comments were outside the boundaries of his role as DSA and were unacceptable.
