WA Government Proposes Guided Weapons Manufacturing Hub in Collie
The Western Australian government has announced plans to establish a guided weapons manufacturing hub, aiming to make WA the third Australian state to produce such weapons domestically.
Premier Roger Cook outlined the proposal at the Indian Ocean Defence and Security Conference in Perth.
"This hub could become the second-largest contributor to the state's economy after the resources sector," said Premier Roger Cook.
International Expressions of Interest Sought
The government is seeking expressions of interest from international defence companies in allied countries. Defence Industry Minister Paul Papalia confirmed the hub could produce a range of defence items, including vehicles, satellites, uniforms, or first aid kits, and could be located in the mining town of Collie.
Workforce Transition from Coal to Defence
The hub is part of WA's effort to expand its role in Australia's defence industry. The government plans to transition Collie's workforce from coal-fired power generation to new industries.
Collie Shire President Ian Miffling noted the proposal is at an early stage and could encompass various equipment. However, Liberal MP Steve Thomas described the bid as a "thought bubble," questioning workforce transferability.
Opposition Voices Concerns
Greens MP Sophie McNeill opposed the plan outright, stating that WA "must not become a home for murderous global weapons manufacturers."
The proposal remains in its early phases, with the government now inviting international defence companies to express interest in the potential manufacturing hub.
