Prime Minister Accepts Open Letter at Conclusion of 'Walk for Truth'
Parliament House, Canberra – May 28, 2025
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese accepted an open letter from Travis Lovett, a Kerrupmara and Gunditjmara man, following the conclusion of the 'Walk for Truth' at Parliament House on May 28, 2025.
The walk, which began on April 19, covered over 900 kilometers through regional Victoria and New South Wales.
The open letter, written on kangaroo skin and signed by over 12,500 people, calls for a national truth-telling process in partnership with First Peoples.
In his response, Albanese stated: "It is unfinished business, the business of reconciliation. There are bumps in the road. It's not a straight journey, as progress never is." He did not commit to any specific actions but said the government would continue engagement and dialogue.
Alongside the letter, Lovett also presented traditional Aboriginal message sticks. The event coincided with the start of National Reconciliation Week.
Some participants expressed optimism about the prime minister's remarks, though no concrete commitments were made.
