A Pivotal Night in Rugby League and Reconciliation
The 2026 State of Origin series opener will mark a significant convergence of sport and culture, as Game One coincides with the start of National Reconciliation Week (NRW) , which runs from May 27 to June 3.
NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to consider how they can contribute to the ongoing process of reconciliation.
The theme for NRW 2026 is "All In," a clear call for a national commitment to reconciliation.
The Players on the Field
The player rosters for this year's series highlight a strong Indigenous presence:
- Queensland Maroons: The team features five Indigenous players. Selwyn Cobbo is an Aboriginal man, while Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Reuben Cotter, Ezra Mam, and Gehamat Shibasaki are proud Torres Strait Islander men.
- New South Wales Blues: The Blues roster includes Indigenous players Kotoni Staggs and Dylan Lucas.
Voices from the Camp
Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, the Maroons centre, spoke about the deeper meaning of representing his state. He sees it as a direct opportunity to be a role model for Indigenous young people.
"My post-try celebration featuring a shark (baidham) represents my totem, not my NRL team. Showcasing that at this level is important."
Selwyn Cobbo reflected on the personal significance of wearing the Maroon jersey.
"Putting on the jersey fulfills a childhood dream. It means a lot to me and my community in Cherbourg. I want to be a role model for Indigenous and non-Indigenous children."
