Kimberly Birrell Stuns No. 5 Seed Jessica Pegula in Roland Garros First Round

Birrell, ranked 83rd, secured her first-ever win at the French Open and her first Grand Slam victory outside of Australia.

In a dramatic comeback on Day 3, Kimberly Birrell defeated No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. The Australian, ranked 83rd, recovered from a disastrous start to notch her first career win at Roland Garros.

A Tale of Two Matches

Birrell lost the opening set in less than 30 minutes and soon found herself trailing by a set and a break. However, she stormed back to win the next two sets, flipping the match entirely.

The match lasted 1 hour and 41 minutes. Remarkably, Pegula won more total points (80 to 76), but Birrell won the crucial ones when it mattered most.

A Landmark Victory for Birrell

This victory marks Birrell's third career Top 10 win, following previous triumphs over Daria Kasatkina (2018) and Emma Navarro (2024), both of which occurred in Brisbane.

For Pegula, a semifinalist in previous years at Roland Garros, the loss represents a historic low. It is the first time since 2019 that she has lost in the first round of a Grand Slam.

What's Next

Birrell will face Oleksandra Oliynykova in the second round as she looks to continue her surprise run in Paris.
