Google Play Store Will Soon Warn Users When Apps Are Removed
A new feature discovered within the Google Play Store (version 51.4.19) aims to alert users when an installed app has been removed or delisted from the marketplace.
Currently, the Play Store only notifies users about app removals through Play Protect, and only in cases of serious security threats. Routine removals—whether initiated by a developer voluntarily or for policy violations—have gone entirely unnoticed.
"The primary purpose of the notification is to inform users that the removed app will no longer receive updates via the Play Store."
Internal code strings uncovered during an APK teardown reveal the planned messaging. For a single app, the notification will read: "%1$s was removed from Google Play and will no longer receive updates." Separate strings are also being prepared for instances where multiple apps are removed at once.
What This Means for Users
- No More Surprises: Users will no longer have to discover app removals through external sources or by trying to install the app on a new device.
- End of Updates: The core function of the notification is to make it clear that the delisted app will no longer receive patches, bug fixes, or new features via the Play Store.
Important Caveat
It is crucial to note that this discovery is based on a teardown of work-in-progress code. As with all pre-release features, it may not be released in a future update. Google has not officially announced a timeline or confirmed the feature's final design.
