USMNT World Cup Squad: Luna and Gozo Left Out
Two Real Salt Lake players will not feature for the United States in the 2026 World Cup.
Pablo Mastroeni expressed surprise at the decision, while Zavier Gozo vowed to use the disappointment as motivation.
"Luna was a key part of our attack and mentality in 2025," Mastroeni said of the omitted playmaker.
Key Omissions
Diego Luna, a central playmaker for the USMNT throughout 2025, was excluded from the final roster despite his significant contributions. The news was reported Saturday, ahead of the official squad announcement.
Zavier Gozo, an uncapped 19-year-old forward, was considered a long shot but had drawn the attention of selectors. In 14 MLS matches in 2026, Gozo has recorded six goals and four assists.
Reactions
Real Salt Lake head coach Pablo Mastroeni voiced his surprise at Luna's exclusion, specifically highlighting the midfielder's role in the national team's attack and mentality during the 2025 campaign.
Gozo said he was disappointed but motivated by the snub.
Next Steps
Both players will now take time off before resuming training with Real Salt Lake in June.
