Starlink Mini to Get Integrated Battery, Firmware Code Suggests

Code discovered in recent Starlink firmware indicates that SpaceX could soon release a version of its smallest internet dish with a built-in battery.

University researcher Jinwei Zhao discovered strings hinting at the integrated battery in a May firmware release, as reported by PCMag. The "message DishBatteryStats" line suggests code designed to return specific fields from an integrated battery, including state_of_charge.

The firmware also contains code referring to three distinct power states:

  • Running off a direct USB-C power source
  • Its own internal battery
  • Both simultaneously

Currently, the Starlink Mini must be tethered to an AC wall outlet or portable battery. Third-party batteries like the PeakDo LinkPower series exist but have software issues and high costs.

An integrated battery would significantly enhance the portability of the Starlink Mini, allowing for truly off-grid use without the need for additional accessories.
