Mark Carney Criticizes Israel in Call with President Herzog
"The treatment of activists aboard an intercepted Gaza-bound flotilla as 'unacceptable,'" Carney told Herzog, calling for an independent investigation.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed criticism of Israel during a phone call with President Isaac Herzog on Monday. Carney described the treatment of activists aboard an intercepted Gaza-bound flotilla as "unacceptable" and called for an independent investigation into the incident.
He also condemned remarks made by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir regarding the flotilla. The call follows an international uproar over Ben Gvir's video encounter with flotilla participants, which included 12 Canadians.
Canada had previously summoned the Israeli ambassador to demand explanations regarding the treatment of Canadian citizens involved in the incident.
International Fallout
France has banned Ben Gvir from entering its territory and is coordinating with Italy and Spain to push for EU sanctions against him.
Carney's Past Comments
During an election campaign in Calgary last year, Carney responded to a protester shouting "genocide in Palestine" by referencing an arms embargo. He later said he did not hear the word "genocide."
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized Carney for those remarks.
Last summer, Carney announced Canada's intention to recognize the "State of Palestine."
