Gold Coast Launches Search for Developer to Transform Miami Depot into Major Arts Precinct

The City of Gold Coast has officially opened a request for expressions of interest (EOI) to develop a proposed arts precinct on a four-hectare council depot site in Miami.

The expansive project envisions a mixed-use destination featuring film production and visual effects facilities, alongside residential, retail, and commercial spaces. The plan also includes open-air public areas designed to serve as a community hub.

The council projects the precinct will generate $130 million in annual economic activity and support 1,000 new jobs.

Mayor Tom Tate stated that the vision is specifically designed to bolster the city's screen industry. In a major creative partnership, award-winning director Baz Luhrmann and his wife Catherine Martin’s production company, Bazmark, has been engaged as the project’s chief creative partner.

However, the proposal has drawn opposition. Local MP Ray Stevens raised concerns about the potential for high-rise buildings on the site. Additionally, the Gold Coast Gymnastics Club, located at neighboring Pizzey Park, has stated that its future is jeopardized by the development.

In response to the criticism, Mayor Tate said the council would make the final decisions on the design and emphasized that a master plan for the area will specifically address any impacts on the surrounding sporting precinct.

Key Timeline:

  • EOI Deadline: July 31
  • Shortlisted Proponents Reviewed: Following EOI close
