Wander Franco Found Criminally Responsible for Abuse of Minor

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has been found criminally responsible for the sexual and psychological abuse of a 14-year-old girl in the Dominican Republic.

The court granted Franco a judicial pardon, ruling that he was also a victim of extortion and blackmail by the minor's mother. As a result, Franco will not serve prison time and is "exempted from punishment."

In a separate ruling, the court sentenced the minor's mother to 10 years in prison for money laundering.

Background of the Case

Franco was initially convicted last year for a four-month relationship with the teenager, receiving a two-year suspended sentence. Prosecutors had sought a five-year sentence. Both Franco and the minor's mother were granted new trials in December.

MLB Status and Contract Implications

Franco's MLB career remains on hold, as his sex crime conviction may impede his ability to obtain a work visa to the United States.

MLB released a statement saying: "We are aware of today’s verdict ... and will conclude our investigation at the appropriate time."

If Franco cannot obtain a visa to travel to the U.S., the Rays may not be obligated to pay the remaining $160 million on his contract.

The next court date is scheduled for June 16 for the full judgment reading.
