McGree Ruled Out of World Cup After Injury in Playoff Final

Socceroos midfielder Riley McGree has been officially ruled out of the upcoming FIFA World Cup after sustaining an injury during Middlesbrough's Championship playoff final against Hull City on April 25, 2025.

The 27-year-old was substituted in the second half of the match. Hull City went on to score a 95th-minute winner, securing promotion to the English Premier League.

Two days after the match, the Australian national team confirmed that McGree's injury is severe enough to prevent his participation in the World Cup.

Growing Injury List Hits Socceroos Camp

McGree joins a growing list of players forced to withdraw from the squad. The Socceroos camp has already lost:

  • Defenders Hayden Matthews and Nick D'Agostino
  • Midfielder Patrick Yazbek, who suffered a quad injury

Preparations Continue in the United States

The Socceroos have been training in Florida this month in preparation for the tournament. The team's schedule includes:

  • A friendly against Mexico in Los Angeles
  • Setting up a base camp in Oakland

The final 26-man squad must be submitted to FIFA by June 1.
