Taylor Haynes Suffers Severe Finger Injury After Crab Bite on Live TV

A live cross at the Sydney Fish Market turned into a medical emergency for the Today show weather presenter.

Sydney, Australia – Taylor Haynes, a weather presenter for the Today show, is undergoing weekly rehabilitation after a live television incident in April 2024 left her with nerve damage in her finger. The injury occurred when a crab, valued at $2,500, crushed and bit her finger during a cross at the Sydney Fish Market.

The Incident and Immediate Aftermath

Following the broadcast, Haynes experienced a panic attack and collapsed, fearing she might lose her finger. Crew members were forced to use 30cm tongs to separate the crab from her hand. The bite caused severe nerve crushing, leading to a condition known as a neuroma.

"I thought I was going to lose my finger," Haynes later recalled, describing the intense pain and shock.

Ongoing Recovery and Treatment

One month after the incident, Haynes reports a loss of feeling and sensation in the injured finger. She is currently consulting with a hand surgeon to discuss treatment options, which may include:

  • Natural recovery over a period of 6–12 months
  • Surgical nerve reconstruction if natural healing is not sufficient

Public Response and Social Media Growth

Since the incident, members of the public have shared similar injury stories with Haynes, some involving finger loss from smaller crabs. The event has also significantly boosted her online presence, with her Instagram following growing by over 89,000 new followers.
