Self-Serve Health Check Pilot Raises Alarms in Queensland
Early data from self-serve health check stations in Queensland suggests that up to one in three users may have health risk factors that warrant a professional medical discussion.
The Stations
The health check stations are TGA-registered medical devices that provide validated screening results—including blood pressure, BMI, and type 2 diabetes risk (AUSDRISK criteria)—within minutes. Data is delivered via a secure app.
The Pilot
The pilot partnership between Diabetes Australia, Target Australia, and SiSU Health began with 10 stations in selected Target stores in South Australia. Within just four weeks, nearly 5,000 checks were completed. The initiative has since expanded to 10 Target stores in Queensland, offering checks for:
- Blood pressure
- Heart rate
- Height, weight, and body composition
- Type 2 diabetes risk
The Numbers
- Approximately 260,000 Queenslanders live with type 2 diabetes.
- An estimated 102,500 have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes.
- Nationally, 2 million Australians live with all types of diabetes.
