Cecilia Xu Accepts Place at Harvard After Offers from Six Ivy League Universities
"Cecilia Xu, 18, from Glen Iris, Melbourne, received offers from six US universities: Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Brown, Stanford, and Duke."
A Stellar Academic Record
Cecilia Xu, an 18-year-old student from Glen Iris, Melbourne, has achieved an extraordinary feat by securing offers from six of the world's most prestigious universities. She ultimately accepted a place at Harvard University, where she plans to study history and economics.
Xu was named dux of Melbourne Girls Grammar in 2025, achieving the perfect ATAR of 99.95. She is one of only seven Australian students admitted to Harvard this year.
The Secret to Her Success
Xu attributes her success to a combination of factors: her outstanding academic results, her passion for French and music, and the inspiration drawn from her parents' migrant story.
"She credits their hard work and adaptability as inspiration."
Her parents are Chinese migrants who arrived in Australia 28 years ago with just $100. Xu credits their hard work and adaptability as a driving force behind her own ambitions.
Beyond the Classroom
Xu's achievements extend far beyond test scores. She founded an online French magazine and has played the French horn since the age of eight. Her well-rounded profile was a key part of her application.
Xu also received financial aid to cover the full cost of attendance, ensuring that her acceptance does not place a financial strain on her family.
The Challenge of US Admissions
Will Yaxley of Crimson Education explained the intense selectivity of Ivy League admissions. These schools each accept only 5 to 10 Australian students annually.
"US college applications consider three pillars: academic (40%), extracurricular, and personality."
Yaxley noted that while strong grades are important, they are not the only factor. He emphasized that students with lower grades can still succeed if they have a compelling personal story.
