The Payam Method: A New Approach to Piano Education

A revolutionary piano teaching method, featured on 60 Minutes, prioritizes student engagement and personalized instruction over traditional rigid lessons.

Overview

The Payam Method, developed by pianist and educator Payam Khastkhodaei, shifts the focus of piano education away from strict classical training and toward student motivation and enjoyment. Instead of beginning with scales and standard repertoire, students learn by playing music they genuinely like—whether that's nursery rhymes, movie songs, or video game music.

Formal music theory instruction is intentionally delayed to maintain student interest. Students are also encouraged to interpret music based on their own emotions and experiences, rather than adhering to a single "correct" way to play.

The Philosophy Behind the Method

Khastkhodaei likens his approach to teaching literature: letting students choose what they read while still learning the fundamentals. He explains that this method keeps students engaged and motivated.

"Students learn techniques through songs they like, not by being forced to learn specific songs."

He is critical of traditional classical pedagogy, arguing that classical theory can strip joy and make everyone play the same way. To illustrate, he demonstrates how playing the same notes with different emotional states produces vastly different musical interpretations.

A Contrast with Traditional Lessons

Traditional piano instruction typically follows a rigid structure: scales first, then classical pieces, with limited room for exploration or personal expression. Many students lose interest as a result.

Correspondent Bill Whitaker, who reported the story for 60 Minutes, shared that his own childhood piano lessons were rigid and led to disengagement—a common experience the Payam Method aims to reverse.

Current Reach and Expansion

Payam Music, the organization behind the method, currently offers online lessons as well as instruction at physical locations in:

  • California
  • Maryland
  • New York
  • Washington state

The company has announced plans to expand further.
