According to the McCain Institute, Douglas McCain died suddenly last week. He served as a Navy pilot beginning in 1982, flying A-6 Intruders. Following his military service, he transitioned to a career as a commercial pilot for American Airlines, ultimately reaching the rank of captain.

Born in Florida, Douglas McCain attended the University of Virginia. He was adopted by then-Senator John McCain in 1966, following the senator's marriage to Carol Shepp McCain in 1965.
